Scotch: A World Spirit
Scotch whisky may be unmistakably Scottish, but its story has always been international. Protected by law, the name “Scotch” can only be used for whisky that is distilled and matured in Scotland. Yet from the earliest days of trade, Scotland has shared its whiskies with the world, establishing a reputation for quality and craftsmanship that now spans continents.
Today, Scotch whisky is exported to more than 160 countries, making it one of Scotland’s most significant and celebrated exports. Around 43 bottles leave Scottish shores every second — a remarkable figure that amounts to more than 1.3 billion bottles each year. From Tokyo to New York, Paris to Mumbai, Scotch whisky has become a truly global drink.
What makes Scotch particularly unique is that, while its origins are firmly Scottish, its maturation often reflects an international journey. The casks used to age whisky frequently begin life far beyond Scotland’s borders. American oak barrels that once held bourbon, sherry casks from Spain, port pipes from Portugal and wine barriques from France all play an essential role in shaping the character of the spirit. More recently, distillers have also been using casks that previously held tequila from Mexico and rum from the Caribbean.
These casks arrive in Scotland carrying the influence of their previous contents, lending layers of flavour and complexity to the whisky as it matures. Filled with new-make spirit and matured for a minimum of three years, the result is Scotch whisky - proudly Scottish, yet subtly shaped by the wider world.
In this way, every dram tells a global story: Scotland’s craft, enriched by international tradition, shared with whisky lovers everywhere.
