Whisky Collecting

Collecting whisky can be quite overwhelming with there being so much variety. Since no two malts are alike with an immense range of flavours and aromas influencing the personality and character of each malt, grain and blend. Despite this daunting nature, finding and collecting whisky has become a popular (sometimes even lucrative) hobby for many.
Personally, I was born into and have been working in the scotch whisky industry my whole life. This has given me the opportunity to visit many distilleries and blenders, becoming familiar with each type, style and even region having degrees of variation in taste, bouquet and colour all helping to create their unique characters. The whiskies are a living embodiment of each locality’s blending and distilling heritage, and craftsmen involved.
My own interest as a collector was fostered by colleagues in the industry who took considerable interest in old bottles long before they received the interest of collectors. In those early days, these rare and unusual bottlings were invariably found through auctions, where I was able to pick up many interesting and appealing bottles. These would be from distilleries and brands I knew and respected and whose history I was familiar with.
Since I started collecting, I have witnessed a growing demand for collectable whisky. With the increased popularity and growth of both bottled malts and blended whiskies worldwide, the interest in collecting old and rare bottles as an investment has been increasing. The value of rare whisky, like any other collectable commodity, is speculative. – Whisky does however have the added bonus; you can always drink it! Over the past 2 decades, the prices have risen dramatically, as the demand now easily exceeds supply, and the hobby can prove to be quite expensive.
As long as the industry keeps releasing collectable editions, the market will continue to expand and develop. With this ever-widening range of whisky styles being produced, the scope of collecting is virtually endless. Bottles released today could become collector’s items of the future. That is why I hope what we have to offer will be of interest to consumers and collectors alike.
