All of the flavour from the cask...
in a bottle.

A D Rattray Ltd goes to great lengths to source casks of exclusive and unusual whiskies.

The whiskies we release reflect the different styles and nuances that are evident from any one of the six individual whisky regions throughout Scotland and they have been bottled at their natural strength, colour and without any unnecessary chill-filtration. This of course only adds to the enjoyment of each and every last drop.

Additionally if you are looking for an exclusive commemorative bottling or wish to purchase mature stock then let us know.

Because of the nature behind the Single Casks, they are only available in extremely limited quantities, often no more than a couple of hundred bottles for each cask.

Founded by Andrew Dewar and William Rattray in 1868, A D Rattray began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, however, the company also established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies.

In the latter part of the 1800s A D Rattray Ltd came to represent a number of well-known Highland Malt distilleries – most notably Stronachie* – selling bulk whisky to West of Scotland wine and spirit merchants, publicans and the main Scotch whisky blending houses in and around Glasgow.

Like many other merchants, A D Rattray Ltd suffered during the crisis of the early 1900s and in the late 1920s the partners sold the business to William Walker. Well-established as a whisky broker, Walker set about expanding the business with the acquisition of a number of smaller merchants. Despite rationing during the 2nd World War, the company continued to supply the West of Scotland licensed trade until Walker’s death.

A D Rattray Ltd has returned to the family and is owned by Mr Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendent of Andrew Dewar. A D Rattray Ltd’s resurgence stems back to early 2004 when, using his extensive knowledge and expertise in the whisky industry, Mr Morrison bottled a selection of his own handpicked stock of whiskies for market release.

Today the company’s principal purpose is to bottle unusual and exclusive casks of Scotch Whisky, with each one chosen to reflect the different styles of the six individual whisky regions of Scotland. Whether from Mr Morrison’s own stock or independently sourced, only casks which are found to be of exceptional quality are bottled under the A D Rattray Cask Collection label and released into selected markets.

*Additionally, Stronachie – the company’s own 12 year old single Highland malt – continues to form an integral part of A D Rattray Ltd’s product portfolio.

Rattray's Selection Blended Malt

Rattray's Selection Blended Malt Batch No 1 is a vatting of four sherry butts, each at least 19 years old, representing the regions of Scotland:-Auchentoshan 1991, Balblair 1990, Benriach 1989 and Bowmore 1991

The four casks were vatted then married together for a further 9 months maturation in Benrinnes sherry hogsheads. The result reveals a beautiful complex nose with medium sherry tones, deep engaging sweetness and faint smoke.

This is a unique product with only 1,852 bottles produced at 55.8% abv.

Cask Islay, Vatting No 1

Cask Islay is the latest addition to the A D Rattray portfolio of exceptional and different malt whiskies. Although officially a blended malt, the majority of the whisky in this Vatting No 1 comes from one distillery on Islay. Produced from a small batch of hand-picked casks it has been bottled as a very Limited Edition at 46% ABV and is uncoloured and unchill-filtered.

Young, and extremely smoky on the nose, Cask Islay Vatting No 1 has complex flavours of oats, caramel and honey on the palate, unusual for an Islay malt.

This furnace of Islay peat and smoke is available now.

Next Bottling Nearly Ready

When we do a new bottling we send small sample bottles of each cask to all our major customers so they can make their own minds up about what will sell well in their markets before they place their order. Very often, especially with older casks which have produced fewer bottles, everything has been sold prior to bottling.

New 46% range

Every Cask Collection bottling we do will now include 2 whiskies at 46% ABV to give an alternative to our cask strength products. These will generally be chosen from our younger stock and we'll only choose whiskies which work well at this reduced strength. The result is more bottles to satisfy demand, and a competitive price so more whisky lovers can experience an A D Rattray single cask whisky. Still no colour added, still no chill-filtration, still 1 single cask and still great quality.

As ever, any feedback is welcome.
